NFL Draft: Jets select FIU quarterback James “Captain” Morgan

The New York Jets selected Florida International quarterback James Morgan, this fulfilling the prophecy and correcting an Elton John song in the process.

Morgan was taken in the fourth round before six other quarterbacks. Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert and Jordan Love were taken in the first round, followed by Jalen Hurts in the second round and Jake Eason in the fourth round. With the exception of Love each quarterback taken before Morgan had the luxury of leading offenses filled with draft-able talent.

Morgan’s college career is split between Bowling Green and FIU, neither program is known for pumping out NFL talent, although FIU has built a noticeable legacy in its small history. Morgan will forever be known as the quarterback who led the heavy underdog Panthers to a victory over the Miami Hurricanes in hostile territory, despite being the home team in Marlins Park.

The top two quarterbacks taken in the draft were given a draft grade of 93 and 94 while Morgan was given a grade of 54 and was the 10th ranked prospect in his position, according to ESPN. The common denominator between scouts’ assessments of Morgan is his leadership. Leadership is the first trait Morgan brings up when people talk to him about him.

“I’m absolutely in love with the game of football.” Morgan said. “I have been ever since I was a little kid. I’m going to work my tail off and as much as I can to help an organization win games. And when I come in, I’m going to lead by example.”

It is very likely that Sam Darnold will enter the season as the starting quarterback. Morgan will go into training camp competing with Mike White and David Fales, who has spent the last three years with Jets head coach Adam Gase.
