First Week of Dolphins Training Camp: Three Yards Per Carry review

July 24, 2024
Day 1 of training camp begins with the reveal of the first orange jersey player of the day, Jordyn Brooks. After an indoor stretch, we learn that QB Tua Tagovailoa will participate.  How much, is not known.  It is then revealed that he is indeed participating in 7v7, but when he lines up in 11v11, he only hands the ball off twice, and does not attempt a pass, as Mike White, Skylar Thompson, and UDFA rookie Gavin Hardison took the great bulk of the snaps.  The 6’-3” Hardison has a big arm and promised to be a fin watch on this day.  It wasn’t.  We quickly learned that the offense under this type of QB play is rather pedestrian, and rather boring.
The offense seemed to be operating on a more conservative footing as flat routes and checkdowns ruled the day, till rookie WR Malik Washington caught a pass near the sideline and safety Jevon Holland attempts to get out of the way as he goes head over heels in a very scary looking collision.  Holland quickly recovers and continues to grab reps, as what was feared most is avoided.  Siran Neal gets the PBU on a 7v7 Tua rep, and then gets the interception on Mike White.

Newly re-acquired defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah begins the day in orange.  This day had a theme.  Tua Tagovailoa?  In a lite hoodie, holding his helmet lining, listening to the play calls.  The QB play?  sub-optimal.  The pass rush? Relentless.  Chop Robinson?  Unblockable.  At one point, Chop Robinson beat Kendall Lamm, Austin Jackson, Ryan Hayes and Patrick Paul for pressures.  The highlight of which was an inside move on Austin Jackson that surprised the starting right tackle.  The 1st round rookie was impressive on this day.
Rookie RB Jaylen Wright had a rough go of it on this day.  Wright missed a handoff, and then poorly timed a motion, that killed a play before it started.  Tanner Conner’s snap count grew through two days, and his big play count did as well.  Conner caught a pass from Skylar Thompson on a broken coverage that went a long way.  He caught another that went for a dozen on the boundary.  Mo Kamara flashed as an edge setting buck linebacker.  Outside linebacker Quinton Bell has been impressive with every snap he receives in every situation.  All of this was overshadowed by the newly “holding in” Tua Tagovailoa.

In place of David Long Jr (who is on the PUP list), Anthony Walker Jr. takes the team out on this eventful day as the orange jersey player.  In Mike McDaniel’s availability pre-practice, he was asked about Tua Tagovailoa’s possible participation.  The answer:  “Nothing has changed really from that standpoint and how we’re collectively approaching practice. As far as today, I do think you’ll observe him playing football in a multitude of fashions.”  Interesting.  Does that mean 11v11 participation?  The answer was yes.  A full slate of starter reps.  His first pass in 11v11?  A 70 yard TD to Tyreek Hill over Jalen Ramsey for roughly 50 air yards.  Tua than hit Cracraft.  De’Von Achane.  QB1 was impressive on this day.  Jordyn Brooks running step for step with Achane?  Yes.  Brooks with a sack?  Yes.  Mo Kamara with a flashy run stop?  Yes.  Kamara with a sack?  Yes.  A lot of good came out from this practice, but the best was yet to come.
That is Jaelen Phillips doing change of direction drills, and bending the edge, cutting and sprinting.  He looks close to practicing.  Not so good?  Odell Beckham Jr. is not ready and coming off a real injury.  David Long Jr. has a sleeve on his left leg.  Terron Armstead looks healthy but is on his load management program.
Post Practice.
Different feel to this practice.  Tua was a full participant, and dominated.  Then 3 of us congregate to share the information we had just received that a Tua Tagovailoa extension was on the way.  2 hours later, it was a reality.  Tua Tagovailoa is a 26 year old star QB that finished top 5 in every single metric for quarterbacks the past 2 years.  Tua is deserving of this extension and Miami has finally achieved stability at the most important position.  Everyone is a winner.
