Marlins Fall in Extras: Mets Take Series Behind Alonso’s Big Night
Mets Outlast Marlins in 11-Inning Thriller, 6-5
MIAMI – The New York Mets edged the Miami Marlins in an extra-inning battle on Tuesday night, securing a 6-5 victory in 11 innings at loanDepot park. Pete Alonso played the hero, delivering a clutch three-run homer in the eighth to fuel a Mets comeback.
Late-Game Drama in Miami
The Marlins held a 4-1 lead heading into the eighth inning before Alonso launched a game-changing three-run blast off Calvin Faucher to tie the game. The Marlins had multiple opportunities to regain the lead, but the Mets’ bullpen held strong, forcing extra innings.
After a scoreless 10th, the Mets broke through in the 11th, scoring two runs on a combination of timely hitting and Miami miscues. Miami answered with a run in the bottom half but fell just short as Huascar Brazoban slammed the door for his first save of the season.
Alonso’s Big Night, Mets’ Resilient Pitching
Alonso finished the night 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including two doubles and the game-tying homer. Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto also contributed with key hits, while Joey Winker drove in a run early in the game.
The Mets’ bullpen was outstanding, with José Butto (1-0) earning the win after tossing two scoreless innings. Edwin Díaz and Reed Garrett combined to escape dangerous situations, while Brazoban closed it out in the 11th.
Marlins Come Up Short Despite Offensive Firepower
Xavier Edwards led the Marlins’ attack, going 4-for-6 with an RBI, while Griffin Conine and Otto Lopez chipped in with multi-hit performances. The Marlins outhit the Mets 13-9 but struggled with runners in scoring position, going just 4-for-18.
Nick Hicks also got his first career hit tonight.
Caleb Gillispie turned in a strong start for Miami, allowing just one run over five innings. However, the bullpen faltered late, with Faucher surrendering Alonso’s game-tying homer and Xavier Curry (0-1) taking the loss after allowing two unearned runs in the 11th.
Up Next
The Marlins (4-3) will have a day off before heading to Atlanta for a weekend series against the Braves, starting Friday. Meanwhile, the Mets (3-3) return home for a matchup against the Blue Jays.
